This is for those of you who have a graffiti grudge. Recently the city of Cancun refurbished a large abandoned gravel area into a park. It’s a concrete park, as most parks here are (resistant and easy maintenance), but this park is lined with a lot of grass and trees. They’ve even made the effort to add new lighting and rescue the reproduced Mayan statues that existed from a previous park attempt.
To the delight of my entire SM (Super Manzana) and two neighboring ones, we now have this great park to enjoy. It comes complete with automatic night lighting…a rarity for here. It’s brand new, running up a $2 million dollar bill. Unfortunately, it didn’t take long for the local kids to get a hold of it, spray painting everything in sight. As the weeks passed, the graffiti spread to the ends of the concrete boundaries, including the flower boxes and canopy of the local store that exists in the park. They did, however, spare the school and the police station that is attached to it. Go figure.
A few days ago, just when I thought they’d finished, I came across a new section that was an apparent oversight. Now, I don’t condone graffiti, especially the reckless ‘Sally loves Johnny’ and ‘we were here’ gang type, but this particular graffiti deserves to be called art. If only someone would buy him a canvas…
