The Linguistically Challenged

For those of you with word fetishes such as myself, this might intrigue you. A Marist Poll has announced the most annoying word in the English language  is….WHATEVER. I must agree. Not only is it annoying, it is overused and well, meaningless…whatever…

For many of us though there are a million equally annoying words and terms that rank up there with whatever.

My personal top annoying words:

  • ‘like’ when used by kids as a filler (I cringe when I hear adults say it)
  • ‘anyways’ – this is not even a real word. The correct word is ‘anyway’
  • ‘r, gr8, u, b’ – for ‘are’, ‘great’, ‘you’ and ‘be’

Other runner-ups were:

  • ‘I got’ – could the English language get any worse?
  • ‘To tell you the truth’ – we’re they going to lie?
  • ‘Actually’ – I have a friend who uses this word when she’s about to tell a lie
  • ‘You know what I mean?’ – which is right up there (for me) with ‘I’m reading your mail…’
  • ‘Are you serious?’
  • ‘Irregardless’ & ‘irrespective’ – both improper, double negative words
  • OMG – for Oh My God
  • ‘Sick’…as an adjective for something someone likes
  • ‘Awesome’ – that word went out with mullets…didn’t it?
  • ‘24/7’
  • ‘Seriously’
  • ‘My bad’ – what’s wrong with a good old fashioned apology?
  • ‘Chillax’

What is your most dislike slang word or term?

  1. I loved this post and At Book Value. I feel the same way as you do about words and books. I know you’re a lot younger than I am, but it seems as if we’re from the same generation. I have been able to relate in some way to most of your posts.
    Keep on writing!!

P.S. I’m not getting your posts by email and I have to hunt them down. I suffer from “Old-timers” and can never remember where to look!!!!!
