Crapdogs and Currywurst

By Marlo Heresco

One of the most enjoyable things about traveling is the food. When I’m out and about, I tend to eat things that I normally would not eat at home. Food is such a large part of culture that in my opinion, you’d be missing out on the culture by not participating in the food experience.

For my last trip to Germany everyone kept telling me, ‘you gotta try a currywurst’ (insert crazy voice here). I was curious so late one night in Berlin (actually, it was one early morning in Berlin), a few of us hunted down a corner eatery that served currywurst. Finding that was about as tough as finding a corner coffee shop in North America. I’m not a big meat eater but I gotta say, loved it!

Shortly after Germany I found myself in RussiaMoscow actually. My curiosity was peaked (yet again) one day from constantly passing these food stands that we began to refer to as ‘Crapdogs’, because, well, I don’t speak one Cyrillic word of Russian – okay, only one and it’s the word coffee – but the word above the vendor looks like the word Crapdogs…sort of.

Well, like everything else in life, you don’t know until you try so off we went, Bryan and I. My crapdog eating friend and I actually enjoyed them. They weren’t no currywurst mind you, but whatever part of it was crap…or dog…warranted another.

Bryan and I at Парк Горького, or in English, Gorky Park, Moscow.
