In the Name of Writing

by Marlo Heresco

I’ve spent this past week expanding my writing horizons. Yep, it’s new job time. I very much enjoy the company I write for. My primary company that is, but let’s face it. It’s slave labor. The company…good. The people…great. The pay…what pay? It’s typical, or so I’ve read from my fellow bloggers, coworkers, and assorted writers. I’m convinced that writers belong in the starving artists category. We may even have invented it.

So, it’s for this reason and no other that I have been venturing out into the international world of freelance writing jobs. It’s a big world with many companies all seeking different genres to fill their needs. The pay is about as varied as the writing requests. Take from that what you will.

Looking for a job, especially a freelance writing job, is a job into itself. For such a popular ‘career’, the Internet has yet to catch the wave if you will, of the online needs of a writer. Mind you, neither have many of the employing companies.

Have you read some of their ads? “Looking for part-time content writer. Need someone who can produce at least 8 x 500-word articles in a 7-hour day. They must be perfect. Pay $15 for batch.” Are these guys *&$%* kidding me?!

Weeding out these outlandish companies does not seem possible. It’s not feasible to key in freelance and gosh forbid you key in writer. These are not keywords. These are merely starting points for an avalanche of generalized results. What does one search for then? I am a freelance writer.

As I sit here and complain well, to myself, that I have been housebound for who knows how long (don’t tell me if you know, it will only depress me), I gaze out the window and watch people live their lives while I sit here, laptop ready, and type about mine.

On the lighter side, I’ve been enjoying a few articles from fellow bloggers lately. This morning in particular Intergalactic Writers Inc.  made me feel much better about ‘our’ writing world. I saw his use of the word hermitage and smiled. How cheeky is that?

  1. Newspapers and magazines. Not the web. Print pays decently and quickly. I almost never write web content as the pay is so abysmal. I’d dig up a few good stories about women and pitch Marie-Claire in NY (they like international stuff.)

    • I have learned that each time the word recession hits the news, ‘freelance writing’ takes a hit as well. I recently applied for a web content writing job based in Flordia. The (unadvertised) pay, $2 US / 500 words. A month later a second ad, same company offering $1 US / 500 words. Needless to say I have better things to do with my time however, their ad both saddened and angered me – an American company completely taking advantage of American people at their lowest financial points who were (obvoiusly) willing to write for, well, basically for free.

Due to my location, I feel slightly trapped with web content. I will heed your post comment and see what I can gather but would be beyond forever grateful if you have additional tips or advice on how I can lean to the other (better paying) side. It is a goal of mine to find something more appropriate, more challenging and more fitting. If you have a moment, my online portfolio: http://marloheresco.wordpress.com/
